Congresswoman Jackie Speier Discusses Healthcare, Memoir at SMCMA Gala

SAN MATEO, CA, June 28, 2019 – Congresswoman Jackie Speier capped off an evening of celebration and achievement as the keynote speaker at the 2019 San Mateo County Medical Association’s (SMCMA) Annual Gala, Friday, June 28, 2019. In addition to an emotional and captivating speech, which touched on the importance of Seton Hospital to the plight of children detained at the border, Congresswoman Speier also read excerpts and signed copies of her new memoir Undaunted.

With more than 100 attendees, representing a variety of medical specialties, practices, and hospitals throughout San Mateo County, the SMCMA hosted their Annual Gala at Hotel NIA in Menlo Park to celebrate 114 years of service to the community and recognize those who have contributed to the success of the organization over the past year. 30, 40, and 50-year members were honored, as well as the Distinguished Service Award recipient, which, this year, was Congresswoman Jackie Speier.

Congresswoman Speier has been a member of the SMCMA family since the 1980’s when her late husband, Dr. Steve Sierra, practiced as an emergency room physician at what was then Chope Hospital. SMCMA presented her with the award for her steadfast commitment to improving patient care in San Mateo County since her earliest days as a public official.

“Congresswoman Jackie Speier has been an ardent supporter of the medical community over the years,” noted SMCMA President Richard Moore, MD. “Whether as an Assemblywoman, then Senator, and now as Congresswoman, she has always taken the time to work with physicians on a wide range of issues that would ultimately benefit the care of residents of San Mateo County.”

A new Board of Directors was also sworn in, as the 2018-2019 SMCMA President passed the gavel to Richard Moore, MD for the 2019-2020 term.

About the SMCMA

Founded in 1905, the San Mateo County Medical Association (SMCMA) is the oldest and largest physician organization in the county. SMCMA represents more than 1,600 physicians in all specialties, practice types, and stages of their careers with the goal of improving the physician’s ability to deliver the best care possible.

The SMCMA is dedicated to serving our member physicians through a comprehensive program of legislative, legal, regulatory, economic, and social advocacy, both locally and at the state legislature through the California Medical Association (CMA).

In addition to serving as the voice of the medical community to local and state policy-makers, SMCMA supports members’ practices through a variety of practice management resources, coding and reimbursement help, training, and up to the minute news that could affect your practice.
