Congresswoman Jackie Speier Discusses Healthcare, Memoir at SMCMA Gala July 19, 2019 Areas of interest(s): annual gala, congress, jackie speier, smcma SAN MATEO, CA, June 28, 2019 – Congresswoman Jackie Speier capped off an evening of celebration and achievement as the keynote speaker at the 2019 San Mateo County Medical Association’s (SMCMA) Annual Gala, Friday, June 28, 2019. In addition to an emotional and captivating speech, which touched on the importance of Seton Hospital to the plight of children detained at the border, Congresswoman Speier also read excerpts and signed copies of her new memoir Undaunted. With more than 100 attendees, representing a variety of medical specialties, practices, and hospitals throughout San Mateo County, the SMCMA hosted their Annual Gala at Hotel NIA in Menlo Park to celebrate 114 years of service to the community and recognize those who have contributed to the success of the organization over the past year. 30, 40, and 50-year members were honored, as well as the Distinguished Service Award recipient, which, this year, was Congresswoman Jackie Speier. Congresswoman Speier has been a member of the SMCMA family since the 1980’s when her late husband, Dr. Steve Sierra, practiced as an emergency room physician at what was then Chope Hospital.
