On October 23rd, Keith Darby, CAE, CMA, CSCA, CFE was appointed as the new Executive Director for the San Mateo County Medical Association. Keith assumed his duties from Sue Malone, who retired in October after serving as the SMCMA Executive Director since 1990.
Keith is a visionary leader and experienced non-profit executive with a history of working with professional societies, healthcare associations, and fund-raising organizations. He brings with him a diverse leadership, financial and IT background with experience in the public, for-profit, and not-for-profit sectors. He has served in various capacities within professional societies, management consulting, telecommunications, and the waste industries. Keith also honorably served in the United States Marine Corps and is a proud former serviceman.
As a Bay Area native who was born in Oakland and has lived continually in California for his entire life, Keith is passionate about the wellness, diversity, and the high level of excellence presented by the Bay Area. “The bay area attracts prime talent in all industries, and that is also especially apparent in our local physician community. I am excited to serve my local community and the excellent physicians within San Mateo County.”
The Road to SMCMA
Prior to his appointment with the SMCMA, Keith spent the last six plus years with the American College of Phlebology, a national non-profit medical society focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of venous and lymphatic disease. During his time there, Keith held numerous roles, including the Interim Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director, and the Director of Finance and Technology. At the ACPh, Keith led several major strategic initiatives including the implementation of a strategic plan, organizational restructuring, and the introduction of an integrated medical registry.
Keith’s educational background includes MBA and BA degrees in Business Administration with a minor in Computer Information Systems from the California State University, Hayward. He also possesses several professional certifications, including the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential through the American Society of Association Executives, the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified in Strategy and Competitive Analysis (CSCA) designations through the Institute of Management Accountants, and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) license through the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Keith has held numerous volunteer leadership roles through his affiliation with the Institute of Management Accountants, recently serving as the President of the Oakland-East Bay Chapter and the Treasurer of the East-Bay Northern California Chapter. Keith is also an active mentor for the California Society of Association Executives, providing personal support and direction to other association professionals looking to earn the CAE credential.
In his spare time, Keith actively volunteers at several non-profit organizations benefiting underserved bay area communities. He also enjoys traveling, playing basketball, attending sporting events, and learning about different cultures. Keith currently resides in Hayward with his wife Mizgon, his two young daughters Allena and Arya, and his two dogs Oreo and Gizmo.
“I am excited to serve the quality physicians within San Mateo County,” said Keith. “As their local medical association, our service and support has a positive impact on the physician’s ability to practice medicine which in turn has a direct impact on the quality of care provided to the residents the county.”
Keith is just the fifth Executive Director in the long, distinguished history of the SMCMA, following Robert Wood Jr. (1949-1969), Gene Taylor (1969-1984), Robert Hahn (1984-1989), and Sue Malone (1990-2017).
